Summer Makeup Must-Haves

Before you go out and enjoy the sun, make sure you have these Summer makeup must-haves in your bag! Like the last Fourth of July weekend, you’re sure to go to lots of barbecue cookouts or beach parties this summer. So you’d better protect your skin while enhancing your beauty. Check out these makeup items that you definitely need this summer!

With this in mind, the most important thing to apply to your skin during summer (and all year round) is, of course, sun protection. You might want a beautiful tan, but you don’t want sunburned skin. You want to enjoy the barbecue and not be scorched like a burnt and overdone steak!

Even if you’re not stepping outside the house, it’s still very important to apply sunscreen. It helps protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun and also prevents premature aging. Apply it after you’re done with your skincare routine and before applying any makeup.

The best sunblock for the face I’ve tried so far is Chanel UV Essentiel Anti Pollution Broad Spectrum SPF 50. But, there are also other brands that are as effective.

TRY: Clarins UV Plus Anti-Pollution Broad Spectrum SPF 50 $42 at Nordstrom, Shiseido Urban Environment Oil-Free UV Protector Broad Spectrum SPF 42 $32 at Nordstrom, Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+ $38 at Nordstrom

During summer, I make it a point to use foundation with SPF in it. This way, I get double protection. First from the sunscreen and then from the foundation.

I like Laneige BB Cushion Pore Control SPF50+ and Sulwhasoo Perfecting Cushion Brightening Foundation SPF 50+. Sulwhasoo has more shade choices for both cool-toned and warm-toned gals, which is very surprising for a Korean brand.

If it’s too hot, though, a tinted moisturizer, skin tint or tinted sunscreen might sound better to you. NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint SPF 30 and Clarins UV Plus Anti-Pollution Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Tinted Sunscreen Multi-Protection are just some of the best ones.

TRY: Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Cushion Compact SPF 35 $50 at Nordstrom, Clinique Super City Block BB Cushion Compact Broad Spectrum SPF 50 $35 at Nordstrom, AmorePacific Age Correcting Foundation Cushion Broad Spectrum SPF 25 $80 at Nordstrom

Bronzers are popular during this time of the year. With it, you can have a fake sun-kissed glow that can fool anybody. That is, if you apply it correctly, of course!

Guerlain Terracotta Pause d’Eté Collector Bronzing Powder Duo is a sight to behold, both in the packaging and on the face.

TRY: Tom Ford Large Bronzing Powder $98 at Nordstrom, Clé de Peau Beauté Bronzing Powder Duo $95 at Nordstrom

It’s not enough to just use bronzer, though. You also need to bring the focus to the high points of your face. Remember not to turn yourself into a disco ball! Choose the highlighter that is right for you.

TRY: Hourglass Ambient Strobe Lighting Powder $38 at Nordstrom, Laura Mercier Face Illuminator $44 at Nordstrom

Now it’s time to bring some color to your face. Choose blush shades that make you think of summer. Like orange or coral! Chanel Angelique is still my favorite summer blush.

TRY: Lancome Blush Subtil Cushion Blush in Splash Corail $39.50 at Nordstrom, Benefit Coralista Powder Blush $29 at Sephora, Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush $38 at Nordstrom, MAC Small Powder Blush in Bright Response $16 at Nordstrom

Hot lips are in during the hot summer months. There are so many lipstick brands and so many shades to choose from. I can’t really list my favourites here because there are just too many. If I list only a few of them, it would be unfair to the others. So I’m just going to name my favorite lipstick brands: Chanel and MAC. 🙂

TRY: Christian Louboutin Loubilaque Lip Lacquer $85 at Nordstrom, Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire Lipstick $32 at Nordstrom

Remember to use a treatment elixir like Hourglass No. 28 Lip Treatment Oil. This will help condition and moisturize your lips. It also protects your lips from the harsh elements in the environment, while keeping it supple and soft.

Or, you can go for something with a shot of color like the Lancome Juicy Shaker Bi-Phase Lip Oil which is just $21 at Nordstrom.

Don’t forget your nails!

I know you won’t be able to resist the cute colors in the Christian Louboutin ‘The Pops’ Nail Colour range.

These are just the basic makeup that you’d want to have in your bag during these hot summer months. I do skip on eye makeup during summer days. Summer nights, well, that’s a different story. If I’m going to go out partying or on a date with my husband, then I would apply eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara (or falsies, if I’m not being too lazy) and brow liner or mascara.

  1. i use all kind of makeup product bt I never use contouring , I dnt know how to do it or wht product should I use , i really want a natural look and contouring is really scaring me

    • I used to think the same as you do when it comes to contouring. Years ago, the whole face makeup application actually scared me. When I started using makeup, the only products I was comfortable using were just mineral powder, clear lip gloss and clear mascara. Then, I started using light colored lipsticks. I initially went with nude shades and light pink lipsticks because I didn’t want to have to worry about feathering. Little by little, I began learning how to apply other makeup products. But up to now, I still seldom use bronzers, and if I do, I only apply lightly. I don’t like heavy contouring, so I only apply minimal bronzer, highlighter and blush. In the future, I might write an article on contouring so we can both learn more about it. 😀

  2. Hello Alyssa! That Guerlain bronzer is just divine and I really really love it! Thanks for this great article and more power!
