Maybelline Bold Matte MAT 1 (Color Sensational) Lipstick had been around for quite some time already, but I have only tried it just now. I couldn’t find it in Maybelline New York’s (US) website, so it probably is already discontinued. I’m not 100% sure about it, though.
When I bought Maybelline Bold Matte MAT 1 Lipstick, I only swatched it on my arm. When swatching products at the counter, I now only swatch on my arm again. Last month, I had tried to test lipsticks directly on my lips (after rigorous disinfecting of the product) around 3 times I guess. But, after those 3 times, I’m back to my “Arm swatch only, please” rule.
I have sensitive lips, so you can understand why. Even after wiping off a large amount of the lipstick tester on a clean tissue and then disinfecting it, it’s very possible that some bacteria buildup are still present in the lipstick. I shudder at the thought of ever doing it again! Instead of letting us apply lipsticks directly to our lips, makeup counters should offer disposable lip brushes for sanitary purposes. But then again, most of their lipstick testers are open and prone to collecting dust.
Anyways, when I swatched Maybelline Bold Matte MAT 1 at the counter, it glided smoothly on my arm. Wow! Is this really a matte lipstick? The color looked good in the store lighting, too!
What Maybelline says about their Bold Matte lipsticks:
Dare to come alive with Color Sensational Bold Matte
• Convey your style with bolder vivid color like never before.
• Keep lips moist with mixture of pure honey and pollen extract
Maybelline Bold Matte MAT 1 Lipstick is a medium, cool-toned pink that is quite neon-y. In the bullet, it looks really matte and seems to be very much pigmented. But with just 1 swipe, the finish is a bit sheer. 2 to 3 swipes is recommended to achieve an even and opaque color. In the swatches on my arm, you will notice how it is semi-sheer with just 1 swipe.
Maybelline Bold Matte MAT 1 would work best on those with cool skintones. For all other skintones and undertones, it will just depend on whether you like, and don’t mind, wearing neon-y lipsticks.
The texture is matte but has a satin-matte finish when first applied on the lips. Maybelline Bold Matte MAT 1 Lipstick glides easily on the lips and does not tug at all. However, it was a bit patchy and settled into my lip lines. I didn’t experience any feathering, but if you’re prone to feathering, then you might want to line your lips first as it wouldn’t look good for a bright lipstick to feather. After about an hour or so, the tiny bit of satin sheen is gone and it becomes more matte.
Maybelline Bold Matte MAT 1 is very unforgiving on dry lips. So if you have dry lips like mine, you will really need to exfoliate your lips and apply a lip balm before applying this lipstick.
With just a single layer of Maybelline Bold Matte Mat 1 on my lips, it is semi-sheer and not too neon. Maybelline Bold Matte MAT 1 didn’t completely suck the moisture from my lips, but it was still a little bit drying. After eating and drinking, it did dry up more and made my lips flake a bit. However, the color stayed put, well about 70% of the color did. With greasy foods, though, the color is completely gone after eating, and reapplication will be necessary.
Maybelline Bold Matte MAT 1 lipstick also leaves a stain, but this is even more drying. Once I got to the stain stage, I had wanted to apply a moisturizing lip balm to soothe my drying lips. But I resisted the urge and endured to test it out completely. I was actually surprised at how long-lasting it is! It lasted around 5 to 6 hours on my lips and then the stain stayed for another 1 to 2 hours.
It was fairly easy to remove using a good lip/eye makeup remover. After removing Maybelline Bold Matte MAT 1, my lips were almost back to its normal state of being just a tad dry. I didn’t want to take any chances, though. I immediately applied Vaseline Lip Therapy to bring back the moisture to my lips. 😉
• Exfoliate the lips really well.
• Apply your favorite lip balm
• Apply lip primer like MAC Prep+Prime Lip and wait for it to become tacky, about a minute.
• Apply 1 layer then blot with a tissue.
• Apply a second layer and blot again.
• Apply a third layer only on the center parts of the lips so it will appear fuller. Blot ever so lightly.

I don’t have anything in my makeup collection that is similar to Maybelline Bold Matte MAT 1. It might be similar to MAC Viva Glam Nicki, but I couldn’t swatch them side by side to check since I don’t have it anymore. Unfortunately, I’ve already given away my Viva Glam Nicki because it was too drying on my lips.
Maybelline Bold Matte MAT 1 Lipstick is available for PhP399 from The SM Store in Mall of Asia. It is very much cheaper than regular MAC or Chanel matte lipsticks, so what is there to complain about, right?
