MAC La Vie En Rouge Matte Lipstick was released by MAC Cosmetics as part of The Matte Lip collection. I wasn’t really planning on buying La Vie En Rouge, nor any of the other lipsticks in The Matte Lip collection, but after swatching it on my arm, I immediately felt the need to add it to my lipstick collection. I didn’t even have to try it on my lips to know that it would be an awesome lipstick for me. Call it Intuition! Well, not really. I call it impulsive buying! 😉

M•A•C THE MATTE LIP COLLECTION
The Matte Lip is here to stay. Create a standout look with the fashion-forward new shades of our iconic matte lipstick. Vibrant hues like fuchsia Velvet Violet and La Vie En Rouge are a bold contrast to the rich burgundy of Fashion Revival and nude of Styled in Sepia. For the best in colour intensity, Pro Longwear Lip Pencils in super-saturated shades to make a modern statement. Go for the cool rouge of Trust in Red or boost it up with new Bespoken For, a dark, creamy plum. For a polished finish, accent with the soft, pinky hues of Pro Longwear Blush – long-lasting colour that’s purely fabulous.
MAC La Vie En Rouge lipstick is classified as a bright orange coral. The color on the tube is a medium coral red that is bright but not as orange as MAC Lady Danger. When swatched on my arm, it is a pigmented, coral red that is not too warm. It is opaque in 1 swipe but is brighter with 2 or more swipes. La Vie En Rouge has a beautiful satin-matte finish.
I was a little disappointed with Nouvelle Vogue (reviewed here), the other MAC Lipstick I’ve bought from The Matte Lip Collection, because it was a little bit drying on my lips. But La Vie En Rouge was not as bad. Even the stain it left didn’t suck the moisture out from my lips. Overall, I am pretty pleased with this one.
For a matte lipstick, La Vie En Rouge applies like a cream lipstick and glides easily. It does not tug on my lips and does not settle into the lip lines. Exfoliating the lips beforehand is advised though, and I also use MAC Prep+Prime Lip to make it last longer.
Unexpectedly, La Vie En Rouge feels really light on the lips and for a red lipstick, it doesn’t feather as bad as my other reds, probably because it’s matte.
On my lips, MAC La Vie En Rouge is a gorgeous coral red that is not too orange nor too bright. Because it has a matte finish, it lasts around 4-5 hours before I have to reapply. But I don’t reapply it because I like the stain that it leaves. I also don’t feel the need to apply a lip balm or another moisturizing lipstick after a few hours because it surprisingly does not dry out my lips. 😀
After eating and drinking, La Vie En Rouge stays put, so it doesn’t really warrant a fresh layer. Although when you eat oily and greasy foods, it may tend to fade the lipstick a bit, especially in the areas where the oil and grease touched the lips.
I bought La Vie En Rouge from MAC in Mall of Asia for Php1, 000. I believe that this is not a Limited Edition (because it’s still in MAC’s website but I’m not 100% sure) but they do sell out fast. So if you want to buy this shade as well, you might want to call the M•A•C stores near you first, to check if they have it in stock before dropping by. Alternatively, you may also purchase it online from Nordstrom or Macy’s for $16.
